The countdown

A year has passed since an oil tanker had an accident causing a large oil spill. Otero, the Undersecretary of Fisheries of the regional government, presents an advertising campaign to announce the recovery of the coast and the fishing sector. Objectively however, it is a misinformation campaign with the purpose of silencing the criticism of the way the disaster was handled. Sailors, journalists, shopkeepers and volunteers are the other major actors in this choral drama, which gains in nuances and depth as the story - told in reverse - unfolds before the reader.

Twenty years after the Prestige catastrophe, reading La Cuenta Atrás seems like the perfect remedy to avoid the fulfillment of Cicero's maxim, according to which "those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes".

A collaboration by awarded authors Carlos Portela and Sergi San Julián, this Graphic Novel is presented in a new edition that, in addition to including the second part of the work -unpublished until now-, contains abundant additional material that delves into the genesis and development of this project.

    Key Points
    • Inspired by a real event: the sinking of the oil tanker Prestige off the coast of Galicia in 2002. An environmental catastrophe that affected 2000 km of Spanish, French and Portuguese coastline
    • The work explores the catastrophe from a multifaceted perspective, with an ensemble cast focusing on the role of three groups affected by or involved in what happened: fishermen, politicians and journalists
    • A script as precise as clockwork: the narrative unfolds in reverse chronological order, so that readers first learn about the consequences of what happened, and as the story unfolds their perception of the true motivations and characterisation of the protagonists changes
    • Carlos Portela was nominated for the Expocómic Awards (Madrid International Comic Fair) 2008 in the category of Best Writer
    • Included in the list of Essentials of the first half of 2023 published by the Asociación de Críticos y Divulgadores de Cómic de España (ACDCómic)
    • Winner of the Best Novel at the 2023 Critic's Awards organized by Dolmen Editorial.
